To explain what an extranet is, it is necessary for us to define in first what an Intranet is.
This last is a local and private (company) area network which uses Internet technologies: Web, e-mail, etc, but whic does not open with public connections. It thus allows a computerized, fast, transparent and not very expensive diffusion of information inside the organization.

The extranet is an extension of the Intranet. It is a telecommunication and teleinformatics network made up of an Intranet extended to allow the communication with certain external organizations, for example with customers or suppliers or more simply with employees on business trip.
